NORTH GEORGIA // ONLINE CURIOSITY: ENABLED  •  STATUS: STILL TINKERING

Cleveland, Georgia • foothills, fiber & a full toolbox

Stephen
Bavington

Technology guy. Mechanically inclined. Permanently curious.

I’ve made a career out of figuring out how things work — networks, security systems, machines and technology — and I’ve never been very good at leaving something broken when I can understand it and fix it.

Field notes

Listen first.
Understand the system.
Fix the actual problem.

NODE: NORTH GA

Some days it’s a firewall. Some days it’s a car, a machine or something around the house. Either way, I want to know why it isn’t working.

About me

Old-school fix-it mindset.
New-school technology.

I live in the North Georgia foothills and work in cybersecurity, networking and security architecture. That’s the professional description. The simpler one is that I like solving problems.

I’m happiest when I can get past the sales pitch, open the hood — literally or figuratively — and understand what is actually happening. I like practical solutions, straight answers, good tools and people who know their craft.

Home is where the technology overlaps with everything else: cars, equipment, electronics, home projects, a little fabrication, animals, and whatever has caught my interest this week.

34°N-ish

Close enough to the mountains to see them. Close enough to technology to keep the network busy.

What I do

Complex systems.
Plain-English thinking.

I’ve spent decades around networks and security. I like the deep technical work, but the part that matters is turning it into something useful.

01 // DEFEND
</>

Cybersecurity

Security architecture, network defense, threat detection, cloud security and helping people separate real risk from background noise.

02 // CONNECT

Networking

The plumbing behind modern technology — packets, protocols, traffic flows, visibility and figuring out where things stop behaving.

03 // REPAIR

Build & Fix

I’d rather diagnose a failed bearing, connector, board or component than replace a whole assembly because somebody says that’s the only option.

The workbench

Usually there’s something
half apart around here.

A sampling of the things I enjoy when the work laptop closes — although, admittedly, another computer often opens.

01

Cars & Mechanical Things

Diagnosis, repair, modifications and the satisfaction of finding the one part actually causing the problem.

fuel + spark + compression + patience
02

Home Lab & Networks

Firewalls, virtualization, cloud, packet capture and building networks nobody technically asked me to build.

ping → trace → capture → understand
03

AI, Electronics & Making

AI, microcontrollers, home automation, 3D printing and projects that start with “I wonder if…”

idea → prototype → fiddle → repeat
04

North Georgia Life

Mountains nearby, home projects, animals, weather, neighbors and enough room to make a little noise in the shop.

The road here

Definitely not a straight line.

I didn’t arrive in cybersecurity through a carefully mapped career plan.

I started with hands-on work — day labor, factory work and machining — then went back to school for computer science. From there came networking, security and a career built around increasingly complicated systems.

I still think like the machinist and mechanic I was before the computer degree: measure it, understand the tolerances, find the real cause and don’t replace ten good parts to fix one bad one.

DAY LABOR FACTORY MACHINIST COMPUTER SCIENCE NETWORKS + CYBERSECURITY

Around here

High-tech career.
Pretty grounded life.

North Georgia suits me. There’s room for a workshop, room to think, and no shortage of things that need building, fixing or figuring out. I like technology, but I also like knowing how to use my hands and being part of a real local community.
